The 25 November 2030 Total Solar Eclipse
in South Australia
Time remaining until total eclipse begins on centre line:
Also see the specific eclipse pages for:
- Queensland (QLD)
- New South Wales (NSW)
- The rest of Australia, on the 2030 eclipse homepage.
The longest duration within Australia for this total eclipse is about 122 seconds, near Sceale Bay on the west coast of Eyre Peninsula. Duration decreases inland but there's still up to 111 seconds of total eclipse in the eastern Flinders Ranges.
Towns and locations within the total eclipse path include Haslam, Streaky Bay, Sceale Bay, Venus Bay, Poochera, Wudinna, Wirrula, the Carrapateena mine, Hawker, Rawnsley Park, Wilpena, Parachilna, Beltana, Blinman, the entire Gawler Ranges National Park, the entire Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, most of the Nilpena-Ediacara National Park, and about half of the Station Stays accommodation members.
Locations less than five kilometres outside this total eclipse include Smoky Bay, Kyancutta, Pimba, Arkaroola, and the Beverly mine.
Locations in far northeast SA, such as Innamincka and Moomba, will have their partial eclipse interrupted by (local) sunset. All other SA locations will see their entire eclipse before sunset. Note in some locations your view of this eclipse may be blocked by hills or mountains to your southwest. For example several public campgrounds in the Flinders Ranges are known to be affected by this issue.

On this map the red contours are the Sun's altitude at maximum eclipse, and the dashed blue lines are partial eclipse % obscurations. See the following maps for detail of the total eclipse. Adelaide has the closest international airport to this part of the eclipse path. Port Augusta is about 300km driving distance from Adelaide.

- The total eclipse path as a grey band across the map, with a purple Centre Line and two purple boundaries (North limit and South limit). You will need to be inside this grey band to see a Total Solar Eclipse.
If you're less than two kilometres outside the purple boundaries you will see a "Beaded" eclipse.
Everywhere else on the maps sees a Partial eclipse. - Some of the towns within and near the total eclipse are labelled, for easier comparison of these maps with your other maps.
- The roads which feature in the duration graphs (below) are highlighted and labelled. Dark pink for sealed roads, dark orange for unsealed roads.
- All maps and eclipse times have been corrected for lunar and local topography, and assume Delta-T = 70.2 seconds. We've also suppressed known errors from Google Maps and Open Street Map.
The differences between each view are:
- First view shows total eclipse duration contours (in seconds) as dashed purple lines, and partial eclipse obscuration percentages as dashed blue lines.
- Second view show the (local) starting time of the total eclipse, in hh:mm:ss, using contours at 10 second intervals.
- Third view show the (local) ending time of the total eclipse using contours at 10 second intervals.

These road graphs plot driving distance in kilometres along a road -vs- the duration in seconds of total solar eclipse.
The durations were calculated for hundreds of points along each road, and an identifiable location (usually a road intersection) is chosen as zero km. Reset your vehicle's trip meter at this location and start driving to your chosen spot. No need for a GPS or navigation app. The graphs include road intersections and other identifiable features as a distance check.
All of the durations have been corrected for lunar and local topography, and assume Delta-T = 70.2 seconds. Driving distances between points were also corrected for any changes in height.
Some of these roads are unsealed and you should check the weather forecasts and the current Outback road conditions before travelling on them. You will be prosecuted & fined $$ if you drive on an officially closed road. You may also become trapped out there and require a very expensive rescue.
Also note some car rental companies prohibit driving their vehicles on any unsealed roads at any time.
If you're not an experienced traveller then we highly recommend watching Visit Corner Country's excellent series of videos about driving safely in the Australian Outback.

Roads in the Gawler Ranges
Check the weather forecasts and road conditions before travelling on these unsealed roads in the Gawler Ranges. They are passable (with care) to all vehicles when conditions are dry. They can become impassable to any wheeled vehicle after rain. Many intervals within the path of total eclipse on these roads are devoid of tall roadside vegetation and terrain obstructions to the southwest. Many other intervals have only scattered trees that are easily avoided. Forested intervals sometimes contain large gaps due to old bushfires.
Beware -- all of these roads are crossed by intermittent creeks and floodways; and have low places that may collect water. Check the depth of any water over the roadway before driving through it. A shallow puddle may hide a very deep pothole, deep mud, missing pieces of road, or debris that punctures tyres or breaks your car. Flowing water more than 0.2 metre deep can push your car off the road. Four Wheel Drive or All Wheel Drive does not make you invincible.
Also beware of wandering sheep & cattle, and suicidally stupid wildlife, on these unfenced roads. Including a large population of wombats who like to dig their burrows into the edges of the roads.

The Outback Highway (B83) begins at a T junction in Hawker and continues northwards to Leigh Creek and beyond. Long intervals within the path of total eclipse are devoid of tall roadside vegetation and terrain obstructions to the southwest. The Flinders Ranges Way begins near Port Augusta, then passes through Quorn and Hawker and a national park to finish at Blinman. Despite some spectacular mountain scenery and semi-desert woodlands, there are many places offering unobstructed views of the eclipse. A third road RM Williams Way passes through Cradock and joins Flinders Ranges Way at a T junction a few kilometres south of Hawker. All three of these roads are sealed, with a single lane in each direction.
Driving south from Leigh Creek through Hawker to Cradock (click for a larger image).
Driving north from Kanyaka ruins through Hawker to Blinman via Flinders Ranges Way, and then west to Parachilna (on The Outback Highway) via the scenic Parachilna Gorge Road. Flinders Ranges Way is sealed with a single lane in each direction. Parachilna Gorge Road is unsealed; check weather forecasts and road conditions before travelling. It is passable (with care) to all vehicles when dry.
Three other unsealed roads, Moralana Gorge Road, Brachina Gorge Road & Bunyeroo Gorge Road, also link Flinders Ranges Way to The Outback Highway through spectacular scenery. These three roads receive far less maintenance so check weather forecasts and their road conditions before travelling.

Flinders Highway (B100)
This is a sealed road with a single lane in each direction. Numerous minor roads -- sealed and unsealed -- provide access to spectacular coastline lookouts, many of them with a totally unobstructed view to the eclipse. Long intervals of this highway and its neighbouring minor roads are bordered by remnant indigenous vegetation (mostly "mallee" -- multi-stemmed trees up to six metres high).Beware -- if you see an inviting gap in this roadside vegetation, check that it isn't the entrance to a paddock of grain crop that's being harvested on eclipse day!

Stuart Highway (A87)
This is a sealed road with a single lane in each direction, linking Port Augusta to central Australia and Darwin. Used by the biannual World Solar Challenge races. The Adelaide <--> Darwin (Ghan) and Sydney <--> Perth (Indian Pacific) rail services both use the nearby railway track. Many long intervals within the path of total eclipse have zero to minimal tall roadside vegetation, and flat terrain to the southwest. Many other intervals have only scattered trees that are easily avoided. Long intervals of the Highway are built upon embankments to keep it above local floodwaters -- and the sides of the embankment can be steep. Be careful if parking on the roadside on these embankments.Warning -- ALL of the lakes shown are SALT, any water in them is undrinkable.

A thousand kilometres of ocean-battered coastline defined by rugged coastal cliffs, beaches, inlets, sea caves, islands and rocky shoals. Almost all of the towns and villages along the west coast are found by the more sheltered inlets; and the Flinders Highway runs through most of them. Minor roads between the Flinders Highway and the coast are usually well-maintained, accessible to all cars, and there are many public car parking places along the coastline. Some of the car parks that service beaches are deliberately constructed inland behind coastal sand dunes, and you will have to walk for a few minutes to reach the beach itself. Most car parks on cliff tops are part of a scenic drive route, and have uninterrupted views of the ocean and this late afternoon solar eclipse. However none of these car parks are designed for huge crowds.
Stay away from cliff edges! They are often weakened and undercut by erosion, and collapse without warning. There have been deaths and serious injuries. And if you happen to be on a beach below a cliff, watch out for falling rocks.

Part of National Highway One. Long intervals of Eyre Highway within the total eclipse path are bordered by remnant native vegetation, primarily mallee woodland. However there are numerous minor roads branching from, or alongside of, Eyre Highway which have much less vegetation.
The landscape between the Flinders and Eyre Highways is almost flat and generally less than 150 metres above sea level. The few topographic prominences that still remain are almost always resistant rock types like granites, gneisses or quartzites; none younger than about 1500 million years old and sometimes eroded into amazing shapes. The infertile and easily eroded sandy soils are underlain in many places by tough layers of calcrete limestone. Despite the poor soils and semi-arid climate, most of this landscape has been cleared for broad-acre grain cropping and sheep grazing. Late November is grain harvesting time; and these activities + truck transportation will be occurring 24 hr/day, 7 days/week.

Eyre Highway roadside vegetation near Kyancutta (and the eclipse South limit). Not impenetrable, and there's an unobstructed view of the eclipse about 15 metres in front of the camera.
Eyre Highway near the eclipse North limit. And near the limits of feasible grain growing....
A panorama from the top of Mount Wudinna. Within the total eclipse path. A determined 3 year old could climb here from the car park in about 15 minutes.
Tcharkuldu Hill near Minnipa is one of several granite outcrops featuring amazing weathering of boulders. Within the total eclipse path.
Pildappa Rock near Minnipa is one of several granite outcrops featuring this "breaking wave" style of erosion. Within the total eclipse path. A walking trail behind the camera goes onto the top of this rock, where there are unobstructed views towards the total eclipse.
Eyre Peninsula's biggest telescope is not in the eclipse path -- and just missed out on 4 December 2002 as well. But how many other farms have a 30 metre steerable radio dish in them?
One of Earth's more unusual volcanic events began about 1600 million years ago in what is now the Gawler Ranges. At least thirty thousand cubic kilometres of very hot silica-rich lava was erupted within a few million years, forming a series of immense "pancakes" and "lobes" flooding across the landscape. These rapidly cooled and fractured to form the columnar-jointed layers of dacite and rhyolite volcanic rock seen throughout the Gawler Ranges today. And while this was happening, enormous volumes of granite was emplaced below, within and around the eruptions.
Earth has many other preserved examples of huge volcanic events, and columnar-jointed volcanic rocks, but almost all of them consist of basalts.
About 580 million years ago, something fell out of space onto the Gawler Ranges and blasted out the ~90km diameter Lake Acraman Impact Crater. Debris from this impact can be seen over 300km away in outcrops in the Flinders Ranges today. The crater has been mostly obliterated by erosion since its formation, but the huge pattern of bedrock fractures it created can still be traced through today's landscape.
The Gawler Ranges landscape today consists of a multitude of domed or rounded hills and ridges 50-200 metres high; separated from each other by mostly flat plains of red sand and grit. Rainfall is too intermittent to support any crops and there are few permanent natural water sources. Despite the aridity there are several hundred plant species growing here, including the iconic Sturt Desert Pea, but many of them only appear after rain events. The entire Gawler Ranges National Park and the entire (privately run) Hiltaba Nature Reserve are both within the total eclipse path.
All of the dirt roads shown in this section are passable (with care) to all vehicles when they're dry. If it's been raining recently they may become impassable to any wheeled vehicle. Road maintenance is infrequent. Check the latest road conditions report before driving on them. For example this report shows all of the Gawler Ranges roads as passable to four wheel drive only.

Australia's main road through the centre of the continent. The path of total solar eclipse includes most of the Highway between Port Augusta and Pimba, within an arid and almost flat landscape. Long intervals of the Highway are built upon embankments to keep it above local floodwaters -- and the sides of the embankment can be steep. Be careful if parking on the roadside on embankments.
This part of the Highway is also followed by the water pipeline to Woomera, and by the transcontinental railways.

The South limit of the eclipse on the Stuart Highway, about 15 minutes drive from Port Augusta. Beyond the roadside trees & shrubs the landscape is dominated by low saltbushes.
A roadside rest stop near the eclipse Centre Line.
Another roadside rest stop north of the eclipse Centre Line. Unfortunately it's not a large rest stop and it's sometimes used to store road construction supplies.
Intersection of Stuart Highway and Mahanewo Road. Within the path of total eclipse.
The McLeay railway siding / passing loop, near Mahanewo Road. Within the path of total eclipse. Most of the railway is single track. These ~2km long passing loops allow trains to go around each other.
The McLeay roadside rest stop (a few km from the railway siding) offers a totally unobstructed view of the total eclipse here.
Another view of McLeay rest stop, from the water pipeline to Woomera.
The Wirappa railway siding / passing loop is between a salt lake and a mesa; but the total eclipse is visible from its northern end.
The enormous Island Lagoon roadside rest stop is designed for overnight parking of a fleet of Quadruple and Triple Road Trains. Or Double or single semitrailers, or oversized loads. You're also allowed to stop or camp here overnight with your car or motorhome or caravan. But park along the southwest side, furthest from the Stuart Highway and nearest the salt lake (Island Lagoon), so that you're not obstructing any Road Trains that may arrive during the night. This also puts you on the same side as the total eclipse here.
The former Island Lagoon Tracking Station (DSS 41) was about four kilometres west of here. Nothing remains at the site except concrete foundations, and the access road has been un-maintained for decades.
Panorama of intersection of Stuart Highway + former access road to DSS 41; a few kilometres inside the North limit of the total eclipse and looking southwest.
This landscape is the product of 500+ million years of continuous erosion. The North limit of the eclipse on the Stuart Highway.

The Flinders Ranges first formed about 500 million years ago when a ~20km thick accumulation of various marine sediments was compressed and folded into a major mountain range. Some of the folds (and diapirs) also incorporated billion year old basement rocks from prior episodes of mountain formation. Erosion for the next few hundred million years reduced these mountains to minor hills. Then ~30 million years ago ancient geological faults within and around the Ranges were reactivated, uplifting the land to commence a re-energised episode of erosion that is ongoing today. We now see geologically ancient rocks -- the roots of the original mountains -- defining geographically young landforms. Many of the dramatic ridges and hills are formed by tougher erosion-resistant rocks such as quartzites and sandstones, and many of the deep gorges follow layers of softer rocks or fault zones crosscutting the tougher layers. An outdoor museum for rock nerds, some of the darkest night skies on Earth for space nerds, and a scenic semi-desert mountain landscape for everyone. After rainfall events there's often a profusion of wildflowers appearing all over the flatter areas.
The South limit of this eclipse crosses both of the main roads into Hawker from the south: RM Williams Way from the Clare Valley wine region, and Flinders Ranges Way from near Port Augusta. Unfortunately the edge-of-total-eclipse view from both "limit crossings" is spoiled by nearby hills. Much better views will be seen a couple of kilometres inside South limit.
Some of the historic ruins at Wilson, a ghost town a few kilometres inside the South limit of this eclipse.
A panorama from the northeast corner of Hawker Racecourse, looking towards the total eclipse. The town is behind the camera.
A great spot to see the total eclipse from at Rawnsley Park station is the Station Hill lookout; about halfway between the camp ground and the airstrip. The airstrip itself also gets a good view but it might be full of aeroplanes on eclipse day.
The Wilpena resort and camp ground are within the total eclipse path, but they won't see it because their eclipse will be hidden by the mountains of Wilpena Pound itself (and lots of trees). You can either do a hike of about 400 vertical metres to the top of these mountains, or (much less tiring) go for a 1km walk eastwards along the sealed Wilpena Road to the small car park shown here.
Or if you go a few km east of Wilpena resort to the main road (Flinders Ranges Way), then the mountains will be even less in your way.
This panorama looking west from Hucks Lookout is one of the most frequently photographed / painted / sketched views in the entire Flinders Ranges.
A great spot to see the total eclipse from at Willow Springs station is the Stokes Hill lookout; accessible via a steep stony track from Flinders Ranges Way. A very close second to Hucks Lookout for photography / painting / sketching ; and with a lot more parking space for cars. Don't bring your caravan or trailer up here unless you want to destroy it (and your car) in a rollover / jack-knife accident on your way back down the access track. Leave it in the caravan parking space at the bottom. The pedestal shown supports an old bronze 3-dimensional model of the visible landscape. And behind the camera there are modern audiovisual interpretative signs.

The eclipse Centre Line near the western end of Brachina Gorge Road. The spectacular mountain scenery of the Geological Trail is a few kilometres behind the camera.
The eclipse Centre Line on The Outback Highway, also on the mostly flat landscape between the ranges and Lake Torrens.
The Flinders Ranges includes many large areas of subdued topography in between its peaks and ridge lines. The intersection of Wirrealpa Road and North Flinders Road is in one of these areas. And it's almost devoid of trees. And it's about one kilometre south of the eclipse Centre Line.
Another area of flat terrain near Blinman is used as the local airstrip. Within the total solar eclipse path.
Looking over Parachilna, from the nearby intersection of The Outback Highway and Parachilna Gorge Road. Within the total solar eclipse path.
A cattlegrid on The Outback Highway a few kilometres inside the North limit of total eclipse. These devices are installed wherever a fence crosses the road and a gate would be impractical. Beware of large animals trying to use a cattlegrid as their escape gap through the fence.
